In a resolute display of commitment to safeguarding the environment and ensuring the well-being of its citizens, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has received accolades from the Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Jamani Tommy Ejiro.
During a recent visit to dredging sites in Otokutu, Ughelli South LGA, Mr. Jamani emphasized the paramount importance of adhering strictly to environmental regulations. He further announced the government's decisive action to shut down any dredging site operating without an approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or engaging in activities that pose threats to the environment.
Joined by the Honorable Commissioner for Urban Renewal, Hon. Micheal Anoka, and the DESOPADEC Commissioner Rep. Ughelli South, Udu, Uvwie, and Urhobos of Warri South, Hon. Goru Karo, Mr. Jamani vehemently condemned the actions of dredge owners who neglect to consider the environmental consequences of their operations. He emphasized that dredging sediment without proper EIA and regular Environmental Evaluation studies can result in severe environmental degradation, endangering both the ecosystem and the safety of the people and infrastructure in the area.
While acknowledging the vital role of mining in economic development, Mr. Jamani made it clear that responsible and sustainable practices must be followed. He hinted at the necessity of closing non-compliant dredging sites as a crucial step to preserve the environment and protect public infrastructure.
He urged all individuals and organizations involved in dredging activities to prioritize environmental conservation and the safety of life and property. Mr. Jamani reminded them of their obligation to obtain the necessary approvals and conduct comprehensive Environmental Impact assessments, ensuring the mitigation of any potential harm caused by their operations.
