In an emotional plea before the Sharia court in Kaduna, a 25-year-old woman named Ruqayya Mukhtar shared her distressing ordeal of marital neglect. She revealed that her husband had not been intimate with her for a staggering two years.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, Ruqayya, the complainant, beseeched the court to dissolve her marriage to a man named Naziru Hamza, citing not only the lack of physical intimacy but also instances of assault and verbal abuse.
In response, Naziru, the defendant, vehemently refuted all the allegations, asserting that he had made earnest efforts to satisfy his wife's sexual needs. He explained that due to the demands of providing for their livelihood, he sometimes returned home late and fatigued, which his wife failed to comprehend. He emphasized that he often obliged her requests for intimacy and would even implore her to be patient until the following morning. He adamantly denied any claims of physical violence against her.
Malam Anass Khalifa, the presiding judge, sought clarification from Ruqayya regarding the presence of witnesses to substantiate her claims. She affirmed that she indeed had witnesses to support her case.
Considering the gravity of the situation, the judge decided to adjourn the proceedings and requested that Ruqayya present her witnesses at the next hearing.
