In a shocking turn of events, an engagement ceremony in Imo State took a dramatic twist when the groom abruptly left the event, citing extortion as the reason behind his decision. The groom, Biobelemoye David, had already made substantial payments totaling N1,500,000 for various wedding arrangements, including food, tents, chairs, and a public address system.
As if that wasn't enough, David was also coerced into setting aside an additional N100,000 as the agreed-upon bride price. To make matters worse, he was demanded to contribute an extra N50,000 due to the fact that he had impregnated the bride before the ceremony.
The situation escalated further when David was fined N10,000 for mistakenly arriving at the wrong homestead instead of the intended location. As frustrations mounted, the exasperated groom was asked to pay an additional N15,000 to appease the impatient elders who had grown weary of waiting.
However, the climax of the entire affair unfolded when twelve veiled women were paraded before David, and he was tasked with identifying his fiancee. Unfortunately, he pointed to the wrong woman, resulting in yet another fine of N15,000.
The breaking point came when the elders astonishingly demanded a refund of N850,000, which had been paid over the years for the bride's education expenses and upkeep since primary school. Overwhelmed with anger, David struggled to conceal his emotions and excused himself under the pretense of using a nearby latrine. Little did everyone know that he had no intention of returning.
Disappearing from the scene, David switched off his phone and was last seen boarding a bus bound for Bayelsa State, leaving behind a bewildered and disgruntled gathering in his wake. This unexpected turn of events has left the community in shock and raised serious concerns about the practices surrounding engagement ceremonies in the region.
