Abigborodo and Ubagboro Communities Assert Ownership of Kuri Field, Demand Government Intervention

In a bold and peaceful protest today, the communities of Abigborodo and Ubagboro in Delta State, Nigeria, made their voices heard, demanding recognition of their rightful ownership of the Kuri field located in the Warri North Local Government Area. The protesters, including women and youths, took to boats and gathered at the Kuri field platform to express their frustration against alleged attempts by Makaraba and Omadino communities, with the support of influential individuals from Warri South Local Government Area, to claim ownership of the field.

Hon. Barr Misan Ukubehinje and Mr. Austin Ogbemi, the chairmen of Abigborodo and Ubagboro communities respectively, addressed the media during the protest. They voiced their concerns over the unlawful seizure of their land by imposters and stressed the importance of dialogue and government intervention to resolve the dispute. Both community leaders criticized the oil and gas committee responsible for the issue, accusing them of making decisions based on politics and fear rather than legal authority.

"We refuse to accept the committee's unacceptable decisions and demand a thorough investigation. We are ready to defend our rights, even in the face of military intervention. You can't grant land to a community without proper documentation, especially considering that this is Warri North, not South," stated Ukubehinje.

Mr. Austin Ogbemi reiterated the communities' claim that the Kuri field rightfully belongs to Abigborodo and Ubagboro communities within the Warri North jurisdiction, dismissing Makaraba and Omadino communities' assertions. He urged the authorities to acknowledge the communities' ownership.

The protesters called upon the state and federal governments to intervene promptly before the situation escalates into a full-blown crisis. They emphasized their commitment to seeking justice through legal means.

In response to the protest, Mr. Augustine Okwazu, speaking on behalf of SHN Energy Limited, assured the demonstrators that their demands would be relayed to the management for careful consideration.

It is worth noting that Abigborodo community had previously written an open letter to Governor Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori, outlining their grievances against the actions of the Oil and Gas Commissioner, Hon Vinc Surveyor General, and SHN Energy Limited. The community accused the company of causing environmental damage and violating Nigerian laws. They urged Governor Oborevwori to intervene and ensure their recognition as the rightful host community under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 20.
