Armed Forces Rememberance Day: Abeke Lays Wreath To Celebrate Fallen Heroes.By Rita Daniel.


The honorable chairman of Sapele local government area council.Honorable Bright Abeke along with staff of Sapele local government council on Wednesday 15th January 2025 honor all fallen Heroes both dead and alive by laying wreath at the Sapele cenotaph, AT&P Roundabout .

 This yearly ceremony 
 was organized to honor Nigeria’s fallen heroes, celebrate veterans, and support the families of those who paid the ultimate price for peace and unity.

 Honorable Bright Abeke,  Chairman of Sapele Local Government Council, during his brief speech,  emphasized the importance of the event. “This day reminds us of the sacrifices made by our gallant soldiers who fought selflessly to preserve  the integrity of our great nation. It is also a call to action to support the families and dependents of our fallen heroes,” he  said".

The ceremony commenced with  prayers and hymns led by prominent religious leaders, including Bishop Dr. Johnson Esiri, Prophet Udu J. Eguonor, and Chief Imam Alhaji Usman. 

Bishop Esiri qouated Ecclesiastes 3:1-11, he  highlighted the theme of unity and purpose. “To everything, there is a season, and today is a time to remember and honor our heroes,” as he urged the audience to contribute generously to the Emblem Fund, noting that proceeds would go towards supporting the Nigerian Legion in caring for veterans and their dependents.

Religious leaders also offered heartfelt prayers for peace in Nigeria, Delta State, and Sapele Local Government Area. Rev. Dr. Abioye led a powerful invocation for global peace, while Rev. Jolomi Edema recited a second Bible reading from Revelation 21:1-5, reminding attendees of God’s promise to wipe away all tears and bring a new era of peace.

As the symbolic launching of the Emblem was laid, Hon. Abeke, the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area led the charge by making a big donation of Five Hundred Thousand naira, this was followed by contributions from other dignitaries, including the High Court Judge, military commanders, and traditional rulers. 

The emotional ceremony also featured the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph by key officials, including the Divisional Police Officer, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Army, and the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom. A minute of silence was observed, accompanied by prayers for the departed souls.

In addition to the solemn tributes, the event also recognized the need for continuous support for veterans. “As a government, we remain committed to ensuring that the Nigerian Legion is well-catered for. The labor of our heroes past shall never be in vain,” Hon. Abeke added.

As the ceremony came to a close,  there was a beautiful parade by the Nigerian Legion, followed by light entertainment to celebrate the resilience and unity of the Sapele community. In his closing remarks, Hon. Abeke encouraged residents to uphold peace, stating, “Without peace, there can be no meaningful development. Let us continue to support the efforts of our amiable Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in building the Delta State of our dreams.”  Abeke concluded.
