DSIEC Ensures Peaceful Elections with Low Turnout in Delta State

*By Rita Daniel*

The Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) successfully conducted local government elections for chairmanship and councilorship seats, despite disappointingly low voter participation. The closely monitored elections took place in Sapele, Oghara, Jesse, and Mosogar.

Initially, there were delays in the arrival of electoral materials. However, the polling booths remained calm across various units in DSIEC wards. The voters displayed little enthusiasm, resulting in low turnout. Nonetheless, the presence of party agents and a noticeable police presence helped maintain a relaxed atmosphere while waiting for the arrival of materials.

Certain wards, including wards 1, 3, 5, 6, and 2, experienced peaceful proceedings and swift completion of the elections. The timely reception of materials and the presence of party agents ensured orderly conduct in wards 3, 5, and 6.

In Mercpherson, Ajimele, Ogorode Road, and surrounding areas, all eligible voters demonstrated peaceful behavior throughout the elections. Due to diligent monitoring by police personnel, there were no arguments or confrontations.

Despite the low voter turnout, DSIEC's efforts to ensure peaceful elections are commendable. The commission's coordination with party agents and the presence of law enforcement personnel contributed to maintaining order and security during the electoral process. As Delta State moves forward, it is essential to encourage greater civic participation and engagement to strengthen democracy at the grassroots level.

Hon. Cyril Abeye Ogodo, the Director General of Sapele Local Government Area People's Democratic Party (PDP) campaign organization, expressed his optimism for a peaceful, free, and fair election after casting his vote in ward 10. He believes that PDP will emerge victorious.

Similarly, Hon. Ejiro Jamani, the Honorable Commissioner for Environment, told reporters that the election was peaceful, free, and transparent. He noted that the PDP worked hard during the campaign and is confident in their victory without any disputes.
