Progressive Govs Back Tinubu’s Reforms, Pledge Stronger Subnational Role

The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has reaffirmed its commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging to advance bold reforms, deepen institutional accountability, and promote inclusive development nationwide.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s strategic two-day meeting held in Benin City, Edo State, from June 27 to 28, 2025.

Signed by PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, the communiqué emphasized the critical role of state governments in shaping Nigeria’s socio-economic trajectory.

The meeting had in attendance governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, who was formally received into the Forum. His inclusion was described as a sign of growing consensus on people-centered governance and strategic alignment for national development.

The governors congratulated President Tinubu on the broad national support for his leadership, and commended ongoing synergy between federal and state institutions, especially in areas of fiscal reform, food security, energy, infrastructure, and social services.

On the economy, the PGF noted the early gains of fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification, but stressed the need for these benefits to reach the grassroots through targeted investments in job creation, food production, MSMEs, poverty eradication, and social safety nets.

They emphasized the constitutional responsibility of all tiers of government to promote citizens' welfare and committed to economic decentralization to boost growth and resilience at the state level.

The Forum acknowledged increased fiscal transfers to states and rising investor confidence in the Nigerian economy, citing APC-led states as key drivers of foreign and local investment flows.

The governors pledged to continue reforms in procurement, digital governance, and regulatory efficiency to improve infrastructure delivery and promote inter-state competitiveness.

Commending security agencies for their efforts, the PGF reaffirmed support for community policing, intelligence gathering, and enhanced surveillance infrastructure. It also condoled with victims of insecurity, especially in Benue and Niger States, and backed President Tinubu’s firm security actions.

The Forum called for empowerment of local governments and community institutions to improve grassroots service delivery and democratic inclusion.

On internal party matters, the PGF hailed the APC’s cohesion and its ability to attract key national figures, describing the party as Nigeria’s most stable and reform-oriented platform. The recent resignation of APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, was acknowledged as part of the party’s ongoing reform process.

Reaffirming their belief in Nigeria’s unity and progress, the PGF resolved to sustain bold reforms, foster inclusive growth, and build institutional trust across the country.

The governors urged Nigerians at home and abroad to unite behind President Tinubu’s leadership and support the APC’s vision for a secure, just, and prosperous Nigeria.
