Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central, has assured the Urhobo people that efforts are underway to secure the release of Ewu-Okuama leaders detained by the military for nearly a year. Speaking on Crown FM Effurun, he expressed concern over their ongoing detention without formal charges, emphasizing the need for justice.
The leaders, including Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo and Mr. Julius Oghoroko, were arrested between August 18 and 20, 2024, following allegations related to the deaths of 17 soldiers on a peace mission to their community.
Dafinone highlighted the collaborative efforts of his office and Urhobo stakeholders, including those abroad, in pushing for the detainees' release or a court appearance. He confirmed ongoing communication with military and justice authorities, stressing the urgency of the situation, especially after the recent death of one detainee in custody.
“We are not resting until this matter is resolved,” Dafinone stated, calling for a fair resolution without political exploitation. He also mentioned ongoing discussions regarding urgent repairs to the Benin/Sapele/Effurun Highway.
On economic issues, Dafinone expressed optimism about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's bold reforms, noting early signs of economic improvement. He urged Delta Central residents to continue supporting the Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda for future development.
