In a significant boost for community policing, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, officially commissioned the newly renovated Sapele Main Police Station on September 29, 2025. This impressive project was spearheaded by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), CSP Johnbull Obioguru, in collaboration with the Sapele Okpe Community and SEPLAT Energy.
During his visit to Sapele for the commissioning, CP Abaniwonda commended the synergistic efforts that made the renovation a reality. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in enhancing security and urged other communities across Delta State to follow the exemplary model set by the Sapele community.
"This collaboration between the police and the Sapele Community is a testament to our broader vision of citizen-centered policing," CP Abaniwonda stated. He highlighted how such partnerships can foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the public, ultimately leading to safer environments.
CSP Johnbull Obioguru, the DPO overseeing the Sapele Division, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sapele Okpe Community, CP Abaniwonda, and the traditional institutions that supported the project. His remarks underscored the significance of community policing in fostering a sense of ownership and shared responsibility for local security.
"When I was first assigned to Sapele Division, my immediate goal was to enhance visibility patrols throughout the town," Obioguru explained. He introduced a comprehensive 10-patrol system aimed at proactive crime prevention rather than reactive measures, a strategy that has yielded positive results.
The DPO also credited the establishment of the “Vigilante Strike Force”—a collaborative effort with the Sapele Vigilante Group—for dramatically reducing criminal activities in the area. "Sapele now enjoys maximum peace," he declared, attributing the calm to the united efforts of law enforcement and community members.
Reflecting on the renovation project, Obioguru noted that it was a collective endeavor, stating, "I consider myself a son of the Sapele Okpe Community." He emphasized that the renovation was made possible due to the community's acceptance and support, showcasing what can be achieved when police and citizens work hand in hand.
The commissioning ceremony attracted notable figures, including traditional rulers, community leaders, religious representatives, security agencies, and civil society groups, all coming together to celebrate this milestone in community safety.
The event served as a reminder of the vital role that community involvement plays in enhancing public safety and the effectiveness of the police force. As communities work alongside law enforcement, the potential for a safer, more secure environment becomes increasingly achievable.
This initiative not only revitalizes the police station but also strengthens the bonds between the police and the people they serve. With ongoing collaborative efforts, Sapele stands as a shining example of how community engagement can lead to significant improvements in public safety and overall quality of life.
