The Gabriel Sunano Foundation has poured encomiums on everyone—individuals and institutions alike—who contributed to the release of the Chairman of Sapele Local Government, Hon. Bright Abeke, after 10 harrowing days in captivity.
Hon. Abeke regained freedom on Monday, a development that brought immediate relief to his family, close political associates, and the people of Sapele, who had remained anxious and unsettled since the moment news of his abduction broke.
Recall that the council chairman was kidnapped on April 10, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed a hotel along Owumi Road in Sapele, shattering peace and escalating fear among residents in the area.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that the attackers fired sporadic gunshots to scare people away before abducting Hon. Abeke and whisking him to an unknown destination, leaving his whereabouts to speculation for the full duration of his captivity.
During the operation, a vigilante member was reportedly shot, further intensifying community outrage and triggering an urgent security clampdown by agencies deployed to restore order in Sapele.
In its statement after Abeke’s release, the Foundation expressed gratitude for the coordinated and persistent efforts of security agencies and government officials, describing the outcome as a strong testimony of commitment and collective resolve.
The Foundation also specifically commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives for professionalism, bravery, and sustained dedication throughout the rescue operation, saying their actions helped ensure the chairman’s safe return.
Beyond security operatives, the Foundation hailed the Delta State Government, highlighting the leadership role of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in prioritising the chairman’s safety and pushing for swift intervention during the crisis.
Community leaders, youth groups, and advocacy voices were equally recognised for keeping public attention on the case and maintaining pressure through consistent calls for action, which the Foundation said helped shape the eventual breakthrough.
While celebrating the safe release of Hon. Abeke, the Foundation urged security agencies to redouble efforts against kidnapping and other forms of insecurity, stressing that similar attacks must be prevented not only in Delta State but across the country.
The Foundation concluded by reiterating that the fight against abduction cannot be treated with lukewarm response, calling for stronger intelligence gathering, improved patrols, and more decisive action to protect lives and restore confidence in public safety.
