The Gabriel Sunano Foundation has extended heartfelt appreciation to individuals and institutions involved in securing the release of Sapele Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Bright Abeke, following 10 harrowing days in captivity.
Hon. Abeke regained freedom on Monday, a development that brought immediate relief to his family, political supporters, and residents of Sapele who had lived in fear and uncertainty since the abduction.
According to reports, the council chairman was kidnapped on April 10, 2026, when heavily armed gunmen stormed a hotel along Owumi Road in Sapele.
Witnesses and sources said the attackers fired sporadic gunshots to scare and disperse people before forcibly taking Hon. Abeke away to an unknown destination.
The incident reportedly also left a vigilante member wounded after he was shot during the chaos, further deepening public anxiety and triggering heightened security activity in the area.
In a statement after his release, the Foundation commended the coordinated efforts of security agencies, government officials, and concerned Nigerians whose actions, it noted, contributed to the successful resolution of the crisis.
Special recognition was given to the Nigeria Police Force and other security operatives for what the Foundation described as professionalism, resilience, and commitment throughout the rescue operation.
The Foundation also praised the Delta State Government, pointing especially to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for prioritizing the chairman’s safety and ensuring swift response once the kidnapping crisis escalated.
Community leaders, youth groups, and advocacy voices were not left out, as the Foundation acknowledged their continued engagement and the sustained attention they helped keep on the case—pressure which, according to the statement, played a significant role in bringing about the eventual release.
While celebrating Hon. Abeke’s safe return, the Gabriel Sunano Foundation urged security agencies to intensify efforts to combat kidnapping and other forms of insecurity, stressing that preventing a repeat of such incidents remains crucial for Delta State and the entire country.
