The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), representing telecom operators, expressed concerns about the current tariff regime during a stakeholders' meeting in Lagos. ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, highlighted the rising operating costs and the burden of 52 taxes across the country, indicating that the sector's sustainability is at risk.
Adebayo emphasized the urgency of reviewing the pricing regime, stating, "Our current pricing regime is no longer sustainable." He acknowledged the need for a timeline to address these challenges and expressed support from stakeholders in the sector. The President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Mr. Anthony Emoekpere, stressed the importance of enhancing the country's telecom infrastructure to improve service quality.
In response, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), assured the stakeholders of his support and commitment to the sector's growth. He emphasized the government's recognition of the telecom sector's significance to the economy and urged operators to enhance service quality and contribute to job creation. Maida pledged to align his actions with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Agenda and the policy guidelines set by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
