Journalism, as a noble profession, requires practitioners to uphold high standards of professionalism when reporting or discussing issues of national importance. Whether in mainstream, freelance, or private media, journalists must conduct thorough research and apply the basic principles of news writing, including the "5Ws and H" (Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How) taught in mass communication and journalism courses.
In light of this, the recent courtesy visit by Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, to Ghana’s President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, represents a commendable diplomatic gesture. It is a long-standing tradition for leaders to extend goodwill to newly elected counterparts, fostering goodwill and mutual respect. Governor Oborevwori, fondly referred to as "Mr. Construction" and the "Ukodo of the Universe," along with his fellow governors, demonstrated this tradition during their visit to the Ghanaian leader.
However, Governor Oborevwori explained that the visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between Delta State and Ghana. By extension, it seeks to enhance ties between Nigeria and Ghana, two nations with shared historical and cultural connections. Such visits represents the importance of fostering regional cooperation and mutual growth.
Nevertheless , media practitioners must be cautious in their reporting to avoid spreading misinformation or bias. Interpretative and investigative journalism is essential for accurately informing the public, as information is a powerful tool in shaping perceptions and driving progress.
Speaking comparatively, despite facing challenges of misinformation, Governor Oborevwori’s leadership in Delta State stands as an example of transparency, accountability, and development. His administration’s achievements dispel unfounded criticisms and highlight tangible progress in areas such as infrastructure and governance.
It is therefore a call to action for all well-meaning Deltans and Nigerians to support Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E Agenda, ensuring its success and advancing the state’s development goals.
