In a resolute declaration, the Forum of Urhobo Kings, known as “Ukoko r’ivie,” has issued an emphatic order forbidding any Urhobo chief from joining parallel chieftaincy associations. This decision came during a pivotal meeting on December 9, 2025, hosted at the Palace of Ovie of Oghara Kingdom in Delta State.
His Royal Majesty Dr. Emmanuel Sideso, OON, Abe I, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom, presided over the meeting, emphasizing the importance of unity among the 24 traditional councils within the Urhobo territory. He made it clear that loyalty to one’s kingdom is paramount and that any deviation will incur serious consequences.
Addressing the media afterwards, the Forum's spokesman, His Royal Majesty Obukowho Monday Whiskey, Udurhie 1, the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, reiterated that there is no recognized body known as the Urhobo Traditional Chiefs Association. Instead, he stressed that the structure consists solely of the 24 traditional councils, representing each kingdom.
Whiskey condemned the emergence of splinter groups and warned chiefs against associating with these organizations. He referred to such groups as “splitters” and made it clear that any chief found in violation of this directive would face severe sanctions.
The Forum has held multiple discussions regarding this pressing issue, culminating in their official communique aimed at curtailing the confusion and discord caused by these unaffiliated organizations. “This communique is issued to put an end to those unnecessary acrimonies,” Whiskey stated.
His message served not only as a directive but also as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with the title of chief. “Every chief in each kingdom is a member of the Traditional Council of that Kingdom, and that ends it,” he declared firmly.
This move marks a significant stand against fragmentation within the Urhobo community, promoting a united front among the kings and their chiefs. The Forum aims to strengthen respect for traditional authority and the cultural heritage upheld in Urhobo kingdoms.
As the discourse continues, the emphasis on loyalty, respect, and adherence to traditional structures remains the cornerstone of the Urhobo leadership's vision for a harmonious community. Urhobo chiefs are thus called to uphold these values while shunning any actions that may lead to disunity.
