Unknown Woman Steals Newborn Baby Boy from Specialist Hospital in LafiaLafia, January 10, 2024 - In a shocking incident that occurred on Tuesday, January 9, an unidentified woman managed to steal a newborn baby boy from the postnatal ward of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia. The mother of the hours-old baby, Mrs. Wosilat Suleiman, recounted the distressing event to reporters. She explained that she had given birth earlier that day via Caesarean Section. A relative of hers had been by her side after the birth but had to leave temporarily to retrieve some items. In her absence, the relative introduced Mrs. Suleiman to a woman she had just met at the hospital and asked her to care for the new mother until she returned.Mrs. Suleiman tearfully recounted, "My relative, who was looking after me, introduced the stranger she met in the ward to me before she went home to pick something. She assured me that the woman would take care of me and the baby until she returned. My relative thought the woman had a patient in the ward, and she trusted her to assist us. However, the woman told me she wanted to bathe the baby and vanished with him."Desperate for her baby's safe return, Mrs. Suleiman pleaded with the relevant authorities to assist in locating her child, as she was still in physical and emotional pain. The hospital management expressed deep regret over the incident, despite the stringent security measures in place to safeguard patients and staff.Dr. Mohammed Salihu, the Acting Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, expressed his astonishment, stating, "This is the first time such a theft has occurred in our hospital." He explained that Mrs. Suleiman gave birth at approximately 3 am, and the baby was entrusted to her relative before both mother and child were transferred to the postnatal ward.Dr. Salihu further revealed that the unfortunate incident unfolded when the patient's relative entrusted the care of her sister to a stranger, believing she needed to retrieve something from her house. The hospital management promptly reported the theft to the police, who have initiated an investigation to unravel the case."Our priority now is to locate the missing baby and bring him back safely. The relative of the baby's mother has already been apprehended, and our staff members on duty at the time have been questioned by the police," Dr. Salihu disclosed. He assured the public that the hospital management would thoroughly review the CCTV footage to aid in identifying and apprehending the culprit. The entire community is now anxiously awaiting the safe return of the stolen newborn, while law enforcement continues its efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice.
